The telescopes of the world is ready for a giant asteroid

Has a diameter of more than four football fields, as defined by NASA, is as big an aircraft carrier. This is a big one, in spatial terms, will pass close to Earth on Tuesday.

YU55, an asteroid similar to the picture, it will be about 324,600 miles from Earth on Tuesday.

YU55 as it is called the circular space rock is not dangerous in any sense, there is no risk of collision with the Earth as it is in the nearest point (about 324,600 kilometers), its gravitational effect on Earth is so small that can hardly be measured.

But his interest is in another respect: their rarity.

The last time a space rock of this size came so close to Earth was in 1976, but astronomers did not know then that this would happen. The next approach known asteroid of this magnitude will be in 2028.

So for amateur astronomers and space, visiting the giant represents a further opportunity to study these objects.

"The objects of this size that pass near Earth have flown into lunar distance in the past, we had no prior knowledge or technology to exploit the opportunity," said Barbara Wilson, a scientist from NASA, when that entity announced the trip on the asteroid.

"When it does, it will be a great opportunity for scientific instruments to observe ground well," he said.
