Neutrinos exceeded the speed of light

The speed of light has been overcome ROME - Scientists at the Opera underground detector in the laboratory in the town of Gran Sasso in central Italy, confirmed that neutrinos (subatomic elementary particles) travel faster than light.

This result was found in an experiment conducted between the Gran Sasso laboratory and the laboratory of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Autiero Dario Italian scientist, who participated in the experiment, told the media that the neutrinos were found to be faster than light in 60 nanoseconds.

The study was performed with Opera, which detects the beams of neutrinos released from the CERN accelerator, LHC, some 730 kilometers away from Gran Sasso to study how neutrinos morph from one type to the other.

They found that neutrinos were ahead and traveled faster than the speed of light, from 300 thousand kilometers per second, which was impossible for Albert Einstein.

One thing that has surprised

The data showed that neutrinos took 2.4 milliseconds to cover the distance, with an advance of 60 milliardesimos second regarding the expected speed.

"We synchronize the measurement of time between CERN in Geneva and the Gran Sasso with a nanosecond precision and measure the distance between the two sites with an accuracy of 20 centimeters," said Autiero.

"Although our measures have a lower systematic uncertainty, a high statistical accuracy and confidence in our results is high, we hope to compare the results with those of other experiments," he said.

Meanwhile, a note of CERN said that "considering the extraordinary consequences of this data, independent measurements are needed before we can reject or accept this result with certainty."

Confirmed these results, the theory of relativity Einstein would be questioned.

"It would be a revolution, because so far all the predictions of the theory of relativity have been confirmed," said astrophysicist Margherita Hack Italian.
